You bought a Tesla. You plug it into a Supercharger and everything just works. Then one day you're in Truro, or Antigonish, or some parking garage in downtown Halifax, and you pull up to a public charger — and the plug doesn't fit.

Here's the short version: there are two adapters most Canadian Tesla owners end up needing, they do completely different jobs, and one of them has a compatibility catch that costs people hundreds of dollars when they get it wrong. This guide sorts it out in about six minutes.

If you only ever Supercharge and charge at home, you need neither. If you ever charge anywhere else in Canada, you'll want at least one — usually both.
First, understand what the plugs actually are
Three connector names matter in Canada right now.
NACS (North American Charging Standard, formally SAE J3400) is the slim connector on your Tesla. It was Tesla's proprietary plug until Tesla opened it up and the rest of the industry adopted it. Every Tesla sold in North America has a NACS port. New EVs from Ford, GM, Rivian, Hyundai and others are shipping with it too.
J1772 is the workhorse AC connector. It's the fat round plug you see on virtually every Level 2 charger installed in North America over the last decade — condo parkades, hotel lots, office buildings. It handles AC only, which means Level 1 (120V) and Level 2 (240V) charging. It cannot do DC fast charging, period.
CCS1 (Combined Charging System, Type 1) is J1772 with two extra DC pins bolted onto the bottom. That's literally what it is — the same plug with a DC extension. It's the connector on most non-Tesla DC fast chargers in Canada: Petro-Canada's cross-country network, most FLO DC units, Circuit Électrique in Quebec, BC Hydro out west.
So the mental model is simple:
J1772 = slow plug. CCS1 = fast plug. Your Tesla speaks neither natively.
An adapter is just a physical and electrical translator between one of those and your NACS port.
The J1772 adapter: the one you'll use most often
This is the small, cheap, unglamorous adapter that ends up doing 80% of the work.
Every Level 2 charger you encounter that isn't a Tesla Destination Charger will almost certainly hand you a J1772 plug. Hotel in Wolfville? J1772. Underground parking at your condo? J1772. That free charger at the university? J1772.
What it does: the J1772 adapter supports charging speeds up to 19.2 kW. In practice you'll never see that number, because the limit is your car, not the adapter — a Model 3 or Model Y tops out around 11.5 kW on AC. That's roughly 40–50 km of range per hour, which is exactly what you want for an overnight stay or a workday.
Why people buy a second one: Teslas ship with a J1772 adapter in the frunk. And then people lose it. Or they leave it plugged into the charger at work. Or they buy a used Tesla and it was never in the box. It's a $70 part that turns a “sorry, can't charge here” into “sure, no problem.”

The CCS1 adapter: the road-trip unlock — with a catch

Canada's Supercharger network is excellent along the 401 and the Trans-Canada. It gets thin fast once you leave those. Meanwhile the non-Tesla DC networks — Petro-Canada, FLO, Circuit Électrique — cover a lot of ground the Superchargers don't, especially in Atlantic Canada, rural Quebec, and northern routes.
A CCS1 to NACS adapter opens all of that up. It supports charging speeds up to 250 kW, which is faster than any Tesla can actually accept, so the adapter is never your bottleneck.
⚠️ Read this before you buy: the CCS retrofit trap
Not every Tesla can use a CCS adapter out of the box. Cars built roughly before late 2020 shipped with a charge-port ECU that doesn't speak the CCS protocol. Plugging in an adapter does nothing — the handshake fails and the session never starts.

What Canada's charging networks actually look like in 2026
The transition to NACS is real but nowhere near finished. Right now the landscape is genuinely mixed:
- Petro-Canada's coast-to-coast fast-charging corridor has been adding NACS connectors alongside its CCS cables at new and upgraded sites — but CCS is still the connector you'll find at most stops.
- FLO and BC Hydro are running the same dual-cable strategy through the transition.
- ChargePoint has an “Omni Port” solution that combines J1772 and NACS on AC chargers, and CCS1 and NACS on DC chargers — one cable, two heads.
- Newer entrants like Jolt and SureCharge launched CCS-first, with NACS “coming.”
- Some regional networks — Newfoundland and Labrador's takeCHARGE, for instance — have no NACS plans at all.
The practical takeaway: for the next several years, if you drive across Canada, you will encounter chargers that want a J1772 or a CCS1 plug. Two small adapters in your frunk is the difference between a charging network of a few hundred stations and one of several thousand.
So which one should you buy?
Buy the J1772 adapter if:
- You don't have one (used car, lost yours, want a spare)

Buy the CCS1 adapter if:
